Director of Athletics
UC Davis has launched a nationwide recruitment for the position of Director of Athletics. We are seeking a dynamic and accomplished individual to serve as the Director of Athletics. The Director will provide vision, direction, and leadership for UC Davis’ Division I Intercollegiate Athletics Program and will act as a liaison for the department to the Associated Students of UC Davis (ASUCD), and serve as representative to the NCAA, the Big West Conference, and four other conference affiliations.
The Director of Athletics is responsible for the overall direction, leadership and management of the Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) program. This includes responsibility for program quality and integrity, resource acquisition and allocation, facility development and management, fundraising, publicity, marketing, athletic eligibility, and liaison with campus and external organizations. A major responsibility of the Director is to provide leadership for the further development of the programs consistent with the objectives and resources of the campus and the campus philosophy of athletics. Oversight includes the management of (23) NCAA Division I sports with over 600 student-athletes and a budget of approximately $31 million. The incumbent acts as the primary official and liaison for attracting private support for interactions with community support groups and coordinates and leads the annual fund drive and capital campaigns. The ICA program employs over 50 full and part-time coaches and over 50 full and part-time support staff. Responsibilities include the eligibility and welfare of student-athletes, program operations; short and long-term fiscal planning and management; marketing and promotions; corporate sponsorships; television and radio contracts; public relations with intercollegiate athletics constituents; and in-depth understanding of the highly dynamic athletic marketplace for effective oversight of the contract negotiation process. The Director reports directly to the Chancellor.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability for leadership and management; extensive experience related to requirements of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Rules and Regulations and the Division I Athletics Philosophy; the ability to work with faculty, staff, and students to develop a vision and strategy within an environment of shared governance; experience in building partnerships internally and externally; demonstrated financial and administrative skills; ability to recruit and retain talented and diverse staff, faculty and student athletes; a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion; a record of success in obtaining extramural funding and philanthropic support; and a collaborative spirit. He/she will possess the political acumen and diplomatic skills to forge productive partnerships. Finally, the successful candidate will share the University’s Principles of Community, which are characterized by respect, integrity, openness and responsiveness and by consultation and collaboration.
The recruitment advisory committee, chaired by Scott Carrell, Faculty Athletics Representative and Associate Professor of Economics, is composed of faculty, staff, coaches and students/student athletes and also includes members of the Foundation Board to ensure that the views of the external community are represented and considered during the recruitment process.
